Filo Labrador is the person I most admire. She is my grandmother and she is a fighter.

My grandmother didn’t have an easy childhood since she lived in a poor family and was the oldest of five children; she had one brother and three sisters. When she was very young, she went to a catholic school but soon she had to drop out of school and she had to get to work to help her parents.

I think she is a fighter because she knew how to take care of her little siblings when she was supposed to. She, of course, also raised her own children and finally, she raised me too, since my parents had long working days and couldn’t look after me except at nights and on Sundays. So I got to call her mum when I was little and today I still do it sometimes.

What susprises me most about her availability, is that she has gone through several quite dangerous surgical interventions, but in spite of all these interventions she has always had a smile on her face and has always given the best of her to her relatives, even in the worst circumstances.

She has taught me things like that nothing can stop you and that there is always a solution for everything. Even if it’s hard for us to find it, you must never give up; that’s why I admire her and she is my example to follow.

PEOPLE WHO INSPIRE US: MUSIC

Students of different classes have been reading about several musicians who have had to overcome difficult barriers and various problems to become the artists they are today. Read about them and listen to their videos or interviews.

THE LANDFILL HARMONIC

Hello, my name is Charles from 2o B, I’m going to tell you about a video we watched in English class. It was about poor children in a town in Paraguay that love playing musical instruments. But the instruments they play are very unusual. They are made from recycled materials from the dump near their homes. They learn playing the instruments (violin, chello etc.) and they enjoy a lot. Now they are famous and travel to many other countries and give concerts. The name of their orchestra is Landfill* Harmonic!

MORE ABOUT THE LANDFILL HARMONIC

I like this video because the children have courage and they enjoy their life with music.

RICK ALLEN

Rick Allen is the drummer of the band of metal “Def Leppard”. He was a really nice drummer but he had a car accident and he hurt his arm. In the hospital the doctors decided the situation was so bad that his arm had to be amputated.

“Def Leppard” were recording the most important album of the band: “Pour some sugar on me”, so in order to be able to keep on playing, Rick designed an electronical device to play the drums without an arm.

I think he’s very clever and inspirational because he is one of the best drum players of all the history of music even without one arm, an essential limb to play the drums.

PABLO LÓPEZ

He is a Spanish singer and musician. Pablo López participated in the sixth edition of OT, in 2008. He didn’t have a good relationship with Risto Mejide, a very tough judge with his assessments. Risto Mejide said that Pablo was a hotel pianist, cruise interpreter or a hunchbacked. Pablo López finished second, but he wanted to get away from the spotlight for a while and composed on his own. Ten years later, he returned to the stage of OT, this time as an international artist. Despite the conflicts, Pablo López and Risto Mejide fixed their differences and problems, today they have a good friendship.

ADRIÁN MARTÍN VEGA

He was born in 2005,in Málaga (España) with hydrocephalus, that is, congenital malformations in his hands and an innate talent for music. It was not long until his parents realized that their little boy had an artist profile.

His path/ career into music officially began in 2014, with a video posted on Youtube. Accompanied by his sister, Adrián performed an impecable version of “Que Bonito” a song composed by his idol Rosario Flores. Since then, he has participated in different programs, such as the “ Spanish reality mom” “I want to be an artist” or “The American Talent”.

In 2016 his parents got Adrián to release his debut album “Full of Life”accompanied by famous musicians such as Jose Luis Perales, Niña Pastori, Coti, Franco de Vida and Rosario Flores. The work was not only a success in sales, but also managed to win a 2016 Latin Grammy nomination. He is a great role model and a champion.

BLAKE (Rapper)

Blake (or B.L.K.) is a rapper from Santa Marta de Tormes, in Salamanca. He sang before being famous with his friends and he also started writing his own songs. His first song was “cosas de la vida” in 2008, and his first album was “Visceral” in the memory of his grandfather. One of the problems that he had was that his grandfather died and that affected a lot in him, because his grandfather was like his best friend.

Other problems that he had were of family and of money (he was very very poor). In the song “lengua de serpiente” he said the sentence “si supieran de mí, sabrían que soy de esa gente que ha tenido que contar céntimos pa’ comer caliente” in the minute 1:19, that shows us that he had very bad economy problems, and he didn’t have a very good life, but he learned that he could do something to survive and he started writing songs and now he has a happy life.
